Pensado's Place

Dave Pensado is not only a hit mixing engineer, but a very generous man willing to share his tips and techniques - so much so that he’s created a channel just to interview big names in the industry in an effort to share the wealth of insight and training from these figures and himself. One of my peers, Tom Race, use to share his knowledge willingly to us younger guys in Atlanta. Tom’s open-handedness always impressed me. But as Tom was fond of saying, even if he showed us everything he did, we’d always put our twist on it and it’d never sound exactly like his. What a great testament to Tom’s confidence and everyone’s individuality!

So in that spirit, enjoy Dave’s info and interviews!

Layering and Sonic Synergy

One of the most common tricks/skills used by many sound designers, producers, and musicians is the technique of layering audio to achieve a desired sound. By combining two or more sounds, you can create a texture impossible to achieve with a single tone. As to sound design, one sound may have the top end definition you’re looking for, but lacks meaty bottom end. Adding another sound with more bottom helps fill the void of the first sound. Combining sounds creates powerful sonic synergy.

This YouTube video is very 80s-tastic, but it’s a great example of how musicians use this idea to achieve layering or sonic synergy while producing songs. Dann starts demonstrating the idea about 6 mins into the video. This technique has been used on guitar tracks for years, even before Dann was playing. Enjoy!
